February 2008

A belated Happy New Year to all our adventuresome traveler friends. 2007 was a fantastic year for us at Great Explorations and 2008 is already shaping up to be incredible. We are passionately planning new adventures both near and far to stir your wanderlust. Our mantra is to keep inspiring you to see the world on two wheels or- coming soon- on foot.

We’ve listed here just a small sample of the trips that we’ve created for this year including a fabulous new cycling trip in Puglia, Italy.

Feeling spontaneous? Here are a few temptations with space remaining on upcoming trips…

Andalucia, Spain : April 17, May 4

Camino de Santiago, Spain: May 12

Provence, France: May 26

Tuscany, Italy: May 31

Featured trip: Puglia

We were introduced to this corner of Italy by one of our Italian guides who lives in the region and has long boasted of its stunning scenery, ancient traditions and some of the best food in Italy. With the Adriatic as a back-drop, quiet roads to cycle, and fascinating sites including the enigmatic trulli in Alberobello we were easily convinced to create a trip. Beginning in Monopoli and finishing 7 days later in Otranto you’ll see the best of this region, all the while enjoying distinctive lodging and exquisite meals. Buon appetito!

Provence South, France

The NY Times recently wrote a feature about Tavel, a small wine village with a big reputation. We’ve been going here for many years; our Provence South trip begins in Avignon, and after an enjoyable ride through vineyards Tavel is where we enjoy our first of many fine lunches. We taste at one of the wineries mentioned in the feature article and learn what makes Tavel wine unique from a wine maker that is happy to share his passion with us.

Self Guided trips with Randonnee Tours

SIn 2006, we acquired Randonnee Tours, the largest operator of self-guided active travel in North America and Europe. We’ve purchased new bicycles, added new routes and enlarged our staff so that we now have ateliers and Area Managers in over 20 locales. Considering a self-guided tour? Don’t forget that these adventures can start any day of the year and can easily be customized to suit your wishes. You can also choose whether to stay in casual B&Bs, or in classic (usually 3-star) or luxurious (usually 4-star) hotels. Though we will always offer guided trips and enjoy the camaraderie of group travel, we know that for some of you, the self-guided formula is one that truly resonates.  The choice is yours…
